What is Happening Now?

Mine City Park

LKAB and Kiruna Municipality are working together on planning for a park in first area that will become affected by deformations. The Mine City Park will serve as a buffer zone between the city and the industrial area.

According to the schedule the detailed plan has to be approved by the City Council in April-May, 2010.

The roads

The planning for a new main road E10 and road 870 to Nikkaluokta and Kebnekaise will continue. The plan is to have a new main road E10 by the year 2015.

The new railway

The railway will be affected by the deformations and has to be relocated. The construction work is in progress and planned to be finished in 2012.

To preserve or not?

The focus is on the future and new neighbourhoods that will be created.  But it is also important to look back and reflect on the areas that will be left to history. Important questions are: Which buildings are to be preserved and which are to be demolished? How shall the preserved buildings be placed to preserve a little bit of the atmosphere from the original location?

Documentation

The municipality is working with a plan of preservation. One of the first steps has been to gather information about the buildings that will be affected. This documentation contains photographs and a detailed description of each building.
