Mine City Park
The reason why we have to relocate/tear down buildings in the first place is because the electricity lines, water and sewage pipes under ground will be damaged first. It is not because the buildings in them selves will be dangerous / unstable.
LKAB and Kiruna Municipality are working together on planning for a park in first area that will become affected by deformations. In this area we have an apartment complex with 150 apartments, 2 culture buildings (Hjalmar Lundbohms home, Bolags hotel) and the City Hall. The Mine City Park will serve as a buffer zone between the city and the industrial area.
The reason for creating the Mine City Park is to make it possible for LKAB to continue its production. The park will become a year-round recreational area. This way the public will have access to the area even after the houses are gone and no one will have to live next to the industrial fence. As the mine area will grow the park will move closer towards the city.

Year 2007 vision for a new city centre will be revised
According to a decision made in 2007 the aim was for a new city centre, north west of Kiruna.
The 30th of November 2009 the municipal executive committee took the decision to look over the comprehensive plan from 2007 again to see if there are other options for the location of the new city centre/downtown. The reasons are new LKAB-facts in the northwest (Luossavaara) about the ground and about new iron ore deposits.

Present city centre
It is very important to remember the present city centre during the period of transformation. It will take a while to establish new neighbourhoods and even a little longer to establish a new city centre. During this time, it is necessary to keep up the maintenance work in the present centre in order for the people of Kiruna to feel that it is a living city and not a city in stagnation waiting for a far-away future.
