Plan for new city centre will be revised
According to a decision made by the municipal council in 2007 the aim was for a new city centre/downtown, north west of Kiruna. But in November 2009 the municipal executive committee decided to review the comprehensive plan to see if there are any other options for the location of the new city centre.
The comprehensive plan for the city centre will be updated according to the decision taken in November 2009. New facts about the ground and some uncertaintes in the area are some of the reasons.
The advantages that was seen with the North West area is that it is situated on safe ground in relation to the deformations. It was also considered to be an attractive settlement area possibly bordering on water if a part of the railway could be relocated.

The comprehensive plan contains of basic data for decision-making. One important thing in this project is that during this process all of Kiruna have to continue developing. Therefore the municipality has decided to work closely with eight development areas in conjunction with the decision made by the municipal council in 2007.

The black area on the map is also where the Mine city park will be established. The grey area will most probably be affected by deformations in the future. The yellow areas are on safe ground considering the deformations. As of know the municipality has decided to work with several development areas so that all of Kiruna will thrive and those are marked with red.
